Definition

PRODUCER LICENSE – Authority to solicit, negotiate or sell Life, Accident & Health or Sickness, Property & Casualy, Personal Lines insurance, Variable Life/Variable Annuity, Credit and/or Limited Lines Travel coverage.

Fees

Initial: $140.00
Amendment: $130.00
Reinstatement: $130.00
Renewal: $160.00
Late Renewal: $160.00 for a total of $320.00
No pro-rating, non-refundable $50.00 application fee.

Duration

After initial license period, EVERY TWO years on the last day of the birth month.

Residents:

  • Pre-licensing course is required before taking the Producer exam.
  • Download the Candidate Handbook and schedule the exam.
  • After passing the exam, wait 1-2 days before apply for the license.
  • Apply by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.”
    (Note: you do not need to submit the passed examination, the Department will verify this information with our vendor.)

Non-Residents:

  • Connecticut will grant reciprocity with an equivalent license in your home/resident state.
  • Apply by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.”

How to Amend Lines of Authority

  • Apply on the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Add Line of Authority.”
  • Note: If you need to amend your license and are within the renewal window (90 days prior to your license expiration date) you must renew the existing license prior to adding any new line of authority. If you try to add a new line of authority prior to renewing your license, the application will be rejected.

How to Reinstate a License

  • To reinstate the license for up to one (1) year after expiration date, you will be required to complete the CE requirement (Resident ONLY) and pay a late fee of $160.00, for a total of $320.00. Apply by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Renew an Existing License.”
  • After one (1) year, residents will be required to complete pre-licensing course and pass the exam, prior to submitting the reinstatement application. Apply by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.”

Waivers due to Designations

Pre-Licensing Exemptions – Insurance Producer Pre-Licensing Coursework:

  • Life – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CEBS, ChFC, CIC, CFP, CLU, FLMI and/or LUTCF and provides a current Letter of Designation.
  • Accident & Health or Sickness – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CEBS, CLU, HIA, REBC and/or RHU and provides a current Letter of Designation.
  • Property, Casualty and Personal Lines – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of AAI ARM, CIC and/or CPCU and provides a current Letter of Designation.

To request a pre-licensing waiver, email the Department a currently dated letter (within 90 days) from the society. In the email, include your name, address, SSN, DOB and what lines of authority you are requesting. Send the email to: cid.licensing@ct.gov, Attn: Producer Pre-Licensing Waiver.

Examination Exemptions – Insurance Producer Examination:

The examination requirement is waived for the following Insurance Producer license applicants:

  • Life – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CLU and provides a current Letter of Designation.
  • Accident & Health or Sickness – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CLU and provides a current Letter of Designation.
  • Property, Casualty and Personal Lines – for any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CPCU and provides a current Letter of Designation.

Submit the application by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.” Email the Department a currently dated letter (within 90 days) from the society. Be sure to include your name, and NIPR transaction number. Send the email to: cid.licensing@ct.gov, Attn: Producer Examination Exemption.

Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

  • Resident Insurance Producers licensed with Life, Accident & Health or Sickness, Property, Casualty or Personal Lines authority, must complete twenty-four (24) CE credits each renewal period.
  • Make sure you have completed all requirements outlined on your transcript. The “status” must read “Compliant” for all categories.
  • You may not “drop” or “remove” a line of authority – the authority held at the beginning of the current license period determines the CE requirement for that license period.
  • If you have completed your CE course(s) and the information is not showing on your transcript, contact the vendor you took the course with directly.

  • Licensees that hold Credit Only or Limited Lines Travel Only authority do not have a CE requirement.
  • Non-Residents do not have a CE requirement in Connecticut.
