The Connecticut Commission on Human Rights & Opportunities, in partnership with CWCSEO, held a statewide Human Rights Conference on October 28, 2021. This full day event focused on bringing together local human rights commissions, social justice groups, agencies, and stakeholders to support each other in protecting civil rights in Connecticut.

The lunch presentation featured award-winning scholar, professor, and frequent news media contributor Dr. Khalilah Brown-Dean giving a presentation on "Journalism in the New Era of Civil Rights." A recording of the presentation is available here. Movements like #MeToo and Black Lives Matter have changed the national conversation. The protests that erupted across the world in the wake of George Floyd's murder have brought issues of racial justice to the forefront of the national conversation. Debates over public health measures have become entwined with debates over religious rights and accessibility for those with disabilities. How those conversations are covered by journalists affects the course they take. Join Dr. Khalilah Brown-Dean for a presentation on how journalism has shaped and been shaped by this new era of civil rights. |
