POSITION DEFINITION

The Assistant Fire Chief serves as Executive Officer of the Fire Department, including responsibility for the administration and operations of the department as delegated by the Chief.  Works under the general direction of the Fire Chief.
 
This position requires thorough knowledge of the management of multiple company tactical operations; thorough knowledge of the Connecticut Fire Safety Code, federal and state OSHA regulations, and NFPA, and ISO standards; and thorough knowledge of effective supervisory practices, principles of strategic planning, municipal administration and budgeting.
 
Applicants with command experience as a shift commander or higher in a community of similar size and applicants with advanced Fire Officer certification such as Fire Officer III, or IV, or NFA Executive Fire Officer Program are preferred.
 
Licensing requirements include the ability to be certified by the Fire Marshal's Office as a Fire Marshal and maintain certification in accordance with CGS, Section 29-298a, certification as an EMT-A, by the Connecticut State Office of Emergency Medical Services, and a Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
 
The selected candidate will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical including a functional capacity exam and a drug screening.

SCHEDULED PART TIME FIREFIGHTER / EMT

 

The Cromwell Fire District and its Fire Department will be accepting applications for Fire Fighter/ EMT to staff positions on a SCHEDULED PART TIME basis.  An hourly rate of $14 will be offered to cross trained personnel who meet the minimum requirements stated below, as well as the option of participation in the Town of Cromwell pension for employees who work a minimum of 20 hours per week.  The selection process will require;

  • Completion of a CFD Employee application packet

  • Successfully pass a pre-employment physical

  • Background check

  • Submission of current resume

  • Submission of FF II and EMT certification copies

  • List of three references

  • Oral objective evaluation conducted by Fire Department staff

     

    The following Pre-Requisites need to be met to continue in the process;

     

  1. Possession of Firefighter II certification in accordance with NFPA  

     

  2. Possession of a valid State of Connecticut Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification

     

  3. Possession of a valid Connecticut Driver’s license with either a “Q” restriction, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) class A or B, or the ability to obtain same within 3 months of hire.

     

    Preferred

     

    Valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certification issued no later than October 2017

     

    Completion of CT Fire Academy recruit program or other equivalent firefighter recruit program

     

     

     

    Successful candidates will be required to complete a 1 year probationary period.

    Part time firefighter/EMT employees will be required to commit to a minimum of 18 hours per week and when available be able to respond on a call back basis to meet operational needs within a prescribed amount of time.
