Senator Joseph Lieberman: CFSI's Legislator of the Year

On Wednesday, August 8th, Bill Webb, Executive Director of the Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI), presented the CFSI 2012 Legislator of the Year Award to Senator Joseph Lieberman (CT) at an event at the Wallingford Fire Department in Wallingford, CT.

Senator Lieberman, a co-chair of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, was first elected to the Senate in 1988 after serving five years as Attorney General for the state of Connecticut.  Throughout his Senate career, Senator Lieberman has been a strong advocate of the fire and emergency services, advancing many pieces of legislation to address the needs and challenges of our first responders.

"It is our honor to present this award to a member of Congress who personifies the bipartisan spirit of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus," said Bill Webb, CFSI Executive Director.  "Among his many outstanding attributes, Senator Lieberman has been a coalition builder.  Reaching out to both Democrats and Republicans, he's been able to achieve a great deal - particularly on behalf of public safety - because of his willingness and ability to build support from both sides of the political aisle.  The award is a small token of our appreciation to the Senator for his leadership and commitment to public safety."

During the 112th Congress, Senator Lieberman has distinguished himself by sponsoring the Fire Grants Reauthorization Act and the United States Fire Administration Reauthorization Act.  Both measures are at the top of the fire services' legislative priorities.   In addition, Senator Lieberman has been active in a number of other initiatives, including post-Katrina FEMA reform and the establishment of a public safety broadband network.

Senator Lieberman will be retiring from the Senate at the end of this year following a distinguished 24-year career in Washington, DC.
