Attorney General Calls DPUC Decision Slashing Connecticut Water Company Rate Increase “Good Start”

June 11, 2010

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said today he is pleased the Department of Public Utility Control (DPUC) slashed from 30 to 10 percent a rate increase request by the Connecticut Water Company.

Blumenthal said his office will file exceptions calling on the DPUC to further reduce the increase to zero and further cut the company’s allowable rate of return.

“The DPUC’s decision is a good start, significantly slashing the Connecticut Water Company’s excessive rate increase request from 30 to 10 percent,” Blumenthal said. “I am pleased that the DPUC heeded my call to reduce the company’s request, sparing consumers an unnecessary and intolerable rate hike.

“I will urge the DPUC to take the next step -- cutting the company’s rate increase to zero and its 9.75 percent rate of return still further. Utilities must do what their customers are doing: tightening their belts and doing more with less.”
