Attorney General Says Islander East Completely Dead After Company Withdraws Final, Long Shot Appeal

February 25, 2009

"Islander East is dead -- finally, irretrievably and irrevocably. Our long fight -- from its first days about a decade ago -- has produced final victory. The developers have abandoned their last, long shot appeal to the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, consigning this environmental abomination to the ash heap of history. This victory is a model of citizen action, grassroots opposition, making a critical difference to kill this ill-conceived, ill-advised project and defend Long Island Sound's fragile environment.

"Islander East was the wrong project, in the wrong place, at the wrong time. This pipeline would have despoiled and degraded Long Island Sound, ripping through and ruining the pristine Thimble Islands and Branford coast.

"I will continue to fight unnecessary, badly sited energy projects that threaten Long Island Sound's environmental health. Pipelines and cables must only be built in Long Island Sound if absolutely necessary -- and then only along routes resulting in the least environmental damage with the greatest public benefit."
