Attorney General Announces Judge Approves Buyer For Marathon Nursing Homes In State Receivership

May 1, 2009

Attorney General Richard Blumenthal announced that Superior Court Judge Jerry Wagner today approved a Storrs company to purchase six former Marathon Healthcare Center nursing homes in state receivership since December.

Paradigm Healthcare Development, LLC has until June 2 to secure financing to complete takeover of the homes in New Haven, Norwalk, Prospect, Torrington, Waterbury and West Haven, Blumenthal said. Time extensions are possible if necessary, he said. The homes have a total of about 500 residents.

In December 2008, the state placed the homes in receivership after Marathon went bankrupt.

"The former Marathon homes should soon have a new owner, assuring they remain open and continue to care for their residents," Blumenthal said. "Families of residents can breathe easier, knowing that their loved ones will not face the trauma of transfer.

"Paradigm will work to restore these homes' financial health and stability, while maintaining quality of care. I will continue to closely monitor this sale to ensure a successful transfer and transition. Our paramount concern continues to be the quality of care and wellbeing of residents."

Paradigm Healthcare is a new company and these are its first homes. Its owners have long experience in the nursing home and healthcare business.
