Attorney General Jepsen and more than 50 attorneys general are joining forces with the Federal Trade Commission, the Wise Giving Alliance and private sector partners to announce Operation Donate with Honor. "Charities fraud of any kind is abhorrent in that it preys upon the good will that we feel toward others, but veterans charities fraud –which deprives legitimate organizations of much-needed resources meant to help our servicemen and women in need – is especially upsetting," says General Jepsen. This campaign aims to provide resources and support to donors so that they may make educated and informed decisions when choosing to give to a veterans' charity. We hope that the following resources provide some guidance to help donors give with confidence and make their donation count.
The Attorney General encourages all donors to read through the Wise Giving Tips before making a donation. Doing a little bit of research upfront and asking questions will help donors make more informed giving decisions.
In an effort to educate retail merchants on steps they can take to prevent fraudsters and scam artists posing as legitimate charities from taking advantage of their customers, General Jepsen, Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull, and Department of Veterans' Affairs Commissioner Thomas J. Saadi sent a letter to over 2,000 retail merchants around the state. This informational letter provides some due diligence tips for retailers who want to support a charity on their premises.
