Lt. Gov. Wyman, Dept. of Veterans Affairs Seek Nominations for Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2017

Nominations Must Be Received by September 29, 2017

(HARTFORD, CT) - Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman and Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Sean Connolly are seeking nominations for the Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame Class of 2017. The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame recognizes distinguished veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities after leaving military service.

"Connecticut's Veterans Hall of Fame is one way we honor our veterans and highlight just how important they are to our communities and our nation," said Lt. Governor Wyman. "Even after years of service in our Armed Forces, these men and women continue to give back, investing their time and energy in our communities and our future. We are so appreciative and grateful to them and their families."

Each year, the Veterans Hall of Fame inducts around ten Connecticut veterans based on recommendations from an executive committee and a final selection by the Lt. Governor. To date, 126 current and former citizens of Connecticut have been inducted, including five recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Veterans may be inducted posthumously.

"This award honors veterans who continued to serve their communities after they’ve hung up the uniform," said Commissioner Sean Connolly. "The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame has honored many fine men and women for their contributions and accomplishments that have enriched our state in countless ways. I encourage community members to take this opportunity to nominate a veteran who has given back after their service to be recognized with this great honor."

Applications should describe the nominee's contributions to their community, including the areas of education, public safety, volunteer organizations, health care, recreation, elected office and other areas of public service.

Nominees must:
- Must have resided in Connecticut for a minimum of five years.
- Meet the definition of a "veteran" under the Connecticut General Statutes 27-103.
- Have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces and provide discharge papers verifying honorable military service.
- Be of good moral character and have no felony convictions.

Those wishing to submit a nominee into consideration must fill out an application form available on the Department of Veterans Affairs website and submit it via mail it to:

Nominations must be received by 4:00 p.m. on September 29, 2017.

The Connecticut Veterans Hall of Fame is administered and sponsored by the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs and the Connecticut Military Department on behalf of the Office of the Governor. Honorees are selected by an Executive Committee comprised of the Commissioner of the Department of Veterans Affairs; Adjutant General of the Connecticut National Guard; three appointees selected by the Governor; and two appointees from the legislative branch - one from a Senate leader and one from a House leader.
