Why are we testing now?
Since the last school year, many states across the nation have piloted school-based testing models. Students will be attending entirely in-person this school year, which increases the number of people in the school setting and the need for more strategies to prevent COVID-19 spread.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Where and when will the test be given?
Screening testing will be done at your child’s school. Your child’s school will determine the testing location.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Will I be charged a fee for my child’s COVID-19 screening tests?
No, there is no cost to participating students. Students’ and parents’ insurance information will NOT be collected.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Will the weekly screening program reduce the time my child spends in the classroom?
Screening testing can be done quickly and prevent outbreaks before they start, therefore keeping most kids in school for daily in-person learning.
Project COVID DeteCT -
What happens if my child is found to be positive for COVID-19 through the screening testing program?
Your child’s school, in coordination with the local health department, is responsible for identifying close contacts and informing students and parents.
Project COVID DeteCT -
What are the benefits of screening testing?
Screening testing can be viewed as another tool, along with masking, handwashing, and isolating positive individuals, to keep communities safe, reduce transmission, and build confidence that it is safe to go to school.
Project COVID DeteCT -
How will the school protect my child’s privacy?
Testing results will be shared only for public health purposes, which may include notifying close contacts that they may have been exposed to COVID-19 and taking other steps to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 in your school community.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Does my child have to participate in the screening testing program?
No, your child is not required to be tested. Participation in this program is voluntary.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Who will conduct the test?
Tests will be done by the state’s COVID-19 testing partners. Staff from these testing partners will collect swabs from students at their school during the school day.
Project COVID DeteCT -
Can my child participate in the Project COVID DeteCT program after it begins?
Yes. If you are interested in having your child participate in the COVID-19 Screening Testing Program, you can fill out a consent form at any time.
