Certification Requirements: School Library Media (062)

1) A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.

 

2) Meets requirements for A, B, or C:

Option A:

  • Holds or is eligible for a Connecticut certificate; and 
  • Completed at least 10 school months of successful teaching; and 
  • Completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit in an approved graduate program for certification for school library media including courses listed under (3) below 

Option B:

  • Completed a minimum of 18 credits in professional education, of which at least six credits are full-time responsible student teaching in a school library media center, and the remainder must include: foundations of education, educational psychology, and curriculum and methods of teaching; and 
  • Complete a minimum of 24 credits in an approved graduate program for certification for school library media including at least 12 credits in specific areas of study listed under (3) below. 

Option C:

  • Hold a current school library media specialist certificate in another state; and 
  • Completed a minimum of 18 credits in professional education, of which at least six credits are full-time responsible student teaching in a school library media center, and the remainder must include: foundations of education, educational psychology, and curriculum and methods of teaching; and 
  • Complete a minimum of 24 credits in an approved graduate program for certification for school library mediaincluding at least 12 credits in specific areas of study listed under (3) below.

3)Have completed the following school library media coursework:

  • Design, implementation and evaluation of media programs (Media programs are defined as all instructional and other services furnished to students and teachers by a media center and its staff) 
  • Evaluation, selection, acquisition, organization, production and retrieval of media (Media is defined as printed and audiovisual forms of communications and their accompanying technology)
  • Teaching students, staff and faculty to utilize media and its accompanying technology by applying valid instructional methods and techniques
  • Assisting students in the interpretation of print and non-print materials
  • Application of principles of administration and supervision for effective leadership and operation of the school library media center program
  • Formulation of the educational specifications and contribution to the design of school library media facilities
  • Approved three-credit course in special education including gifted and talented.
