Connecticut State Department of Education Releases Second Phase of Model Curricula
Second Phase Includes Model 6-8 Science Curriculum
(Hartford, CT)— Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) Commissioner Charlene M. Russell-Tucker today announced the release of phase two of the new model curricula for educators statewide. This second phase includes science curriculum for sixth through eighth grade. These resources will be available to all Connecticut educators at no cost through GoOpenCT, Connecticut’s digital library of open educational resources by and for teachers, professors, students, and education leaders.
“The Connecticut State Department of Education is committed to providing world-class curriculum for our educators to use in a variety of subjects-- developed with stakeholders and experts working in the field,” said Education Commissioner Charlene Russell-Tucker. “These new science curriculum materials, provided in an easy-to-use online platform, save educators time in planning and give our students a stimulating learning experience that prepares them for college and career.”
"We are designing an ecosystem created by teachers, for teachers where everyone will have access to high-quality academic content to match the diversity and need of their classroom anytime, anywhere. Students will have increased opportunity to engage in science curriculum that is focused, rigorous, and relevant,” said Chief Academic Officer Irene Parisi.
Last year, Governor Ned Lamont signed into law Public Act 21-02, which requires the CSDE to develop, for the first time, age-appropriate and rigorous model curricula to supplement existing local curricula. Model curricula development is done through collaboration with the State Education Resource Center, subject matter experts, district officials, educators, and additional stakeholders. With this implementation, Connecticut will become one of 19 “open education resource” states in the nation.
To support the ongoing implementation of the Model 6-8 Science Curricula, the CSDE will provide professional learning opportunities throughout the summer.
