Description of Lesson

This Grades 9-12 lesson titled “How Has Technology Changed the Way Candidates Run for President?” from pbs.org has an estimated instructional time of two to three 45-minute class session of social studies/literacy instruction. During lesson activities, students examine the role of the Internet as a political campaign tool, brainstorm reasons why they agree or disagree with a statement related to the role of technology as an election tool, and draw conclusions from the content of a news article. Independently, students complete their own Internet research to determine the effectiveness of a specific presidential candidate’s use of technology as a campaign tool by recording specific data and opinions on a worksheet.

Cautions

Connecticut teachers should be cautioned that while the lesson as posted lists Grades 7-12 as the target grades, the lesson as written best fits grades 9-12 as outlined in the Connecticut Elementary and Secondary Social Studies Frameworks. In order to elicit direct, observable evidence of the degree to which a student can independently demonstrate the targeted standard, an expanded assessment with a CCSS-aligned rubric will be necessary. The lesson plan does not list any Common Core Reading Standards for Informational Text or any Speaking and Listening standards, although the standards are addressed and could be added.

Rationale for Selection

The lesson is a useful example of how to provide for authentic learning, application of literacy skills, student-directed inquiry, analysis, evaluation and/or reflection. It uses technology and media to deepen learning and draw attention to evidence and texts as appropriate. Extension activities are included.
