Description of Unit

In this unit “Order of Operations and Whole Numbers” from the Georgia DOE, students are expected to solve problems by representing mathematical relationships between quantities using mathematical expressions and equations. Use operations efficiently and apply to order of operations. Write and evaluate mathematical expressions with and without using symbols. Apply multiplication strategies. Develop paper-and-pencil multiplication algorithms (not limited to the traditional algorithm). Investigate the effects of the powers of 10 on a whole number.

Cautions

Connecticut teachers should be aware that Standards for Mathematical Practice are listed for activities, but are not directly addressed Greater coherence and intentionality between activities would be useful. Explicit instructional supports English language learners are not provided. Differentiation for students with special needs, struggling learners or high achievers is very limited. The unit assumes significant prior knowledge without direct explanation on how to address student gaps. There are no assessment rubrics/criteria to assess performance.

Rationale for Selection

Alignment to Rigor: Each task related to a particular standard. Tasks are designed and arranged to serve different purposes (scaffolding, practice, performance and constructing).

Key Areas of Focus: Uses standards in the Operations and Algebraic Thinking cluster to support the new knowledge of standards in the Numbers and Operations in Base Ten major cluster. Coherence between standards and skills; skills build on one another.

Assessment: Formative assessment questions are provided within each activity. A list is provided of tasks, task types, and grouping strategies for activities.
