Description of Unit

This approximate 4-week unit “Farmer Fred - Fractional Parts and Using Fractions & Mixed Numbers” from OER Commons centers on understanding fractional parts of a whole and using fractions and mixed numbers to solve problems.

Cautions

Connecticut teachers should be aware that the unit is a high quality resource, but will require teachers to contribute the following:

  • Integration of technology
  • Expand the existing, but limited differentiation and supports for ELLs, struggling students, special education students and high achievers
  • Examine closely the unit outline vs. unit contents -- some of the standards referenced in the performance tasks are not covered in the Unit Outline.

Rationale for Selection

Alignment to Rigor: The support activities could be used for all students and appear very helpful. Overall, the performance task shows a high level of rigor and measures the standards for which it was designed.

Key Areas of Focus: There are multiple exposures to practice the standards. Learning activities made connections and provided opportunities for students to transfer knowledge and skills.

Instructional Supports: There are multiple and varied instructional supports for students with special needs.

Assessment: The performance task was designed to elicit direct and observable evidence. Student examplars often seemed to fit the score for some of the rubrics that were either higher or lower scored.
