Description of Unit

In this 5-6 week unit “Becoming Fluent with Addition and Subtraction” from the Georgia DOE, students are expected to understand how addition and subtraction affect quantities and are related to each other; reinforce the multiple meanings for addition (combine, join, and count on) and subtraction (take away, remove, count back, and compare); recognize how the digits 0-9 are used in our place value system; and continue to develop their understanding solving problems with money. This unit is lengthy because it is building addition and subtraction fluency,  which are one of the four critical areas for instruction in second grade. A significant amount of instructional time should be dedicated to these concepts. This unit includes 21 Math performance tasks. Teachers should choose tasks to best meet the needs of their students.

Cautions

Connecticut teachers should be aware that the unit is considered a high quality resource if used with the following suggestions:

  • The unit is very lengthy as written and teachers should carefully select specific tasks to meet the needs of their students.
  • Guidance for differentiation and extensions are included (particularly, accommodations for assessment) however teachers will have to develop differentiated instruction at the lesson level.

Rationale for Selection

The unit centers on the major work/ concepts of the grade. It includes discourse, which builds mental math capabilities and reasoning skills and lesson-embedded performance tasks. Extensive lesson resources and activities are included. General strategies for instruction of English language learners and students with disabilities are included.
