Treasurer Erick Russell Statement on Improvements to Unclaimed Property Program Passed by Legislature
Treasurer Erick Russell issued the following statement today on the passage of several improvements to the state’s unclaimed property program, including Senate Bill 393. The measures passed both legislative chambers and await signature by Governor Lamont.
“This is a continuation of our efforts to modernize the unclaimed property system and better connect rightful owners with their lost or abandoned funds. Once signed into law, these measures will provide my office new tools to alert owners by email of opportunities to file a claim, create a process to receive abandoned virtual currency, ensure consumers have information they need before using a third party to locate their property, and establish a data-sharing partnership with the Department of Revenue Services that will assist in locating and notifying potential owners of their unclaimed property.
“I’m grateful for the continued commitment of legislators to improving the unclaimed property program. We have made great strides in recent years to streamline processes and develop new tools to get money back into the hands of its rightful owners. The impact of that work is already clear in the rising number of claims being completed and will expand over time. I look forward to continued collaboration with lawmakers, and upcoming announcements on additional program improvements, as we strive to make Connecticut a national leader in returning unclaimed property. In the meantime, I encourage all residents, businesses, and organizations to regularly visit CTBigList.com and claim their property waiting to be returned.”
