Treasurer Russell Commends Supreme Court Decision Invalidating Trump Tariffs
Hartford, CT – Connecticut Treasurer Erick Russell issued the following statement today in response to a 6–3 decision by the U.S. Supreme Court holding that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by imposing sweeping tariffs on imported goods. The Court’s opinion, authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, reinforces Congress’s constitutional authority over trade and taxation and places clear limits on the use of emergency executive powers.
“Today’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court is a victory for working families and for the rule of law. Tariffs are taxes—and the Trump Tariff Tax has driven up the cost of gas, groceries, cars, and technology for all Americans. This ruling reaffirms that no president can wield unchecked power to impose sweeping economic burdens under the guise of emergency authority. Congress must now do its part as a coequal branch of government to defend American families from any attempt by the White House to reimpose these tariffs. It is my hope that the Court’s decision today will lead to better protections for American consumers, businesses, and our global trade relationships.”
