Connecticut's congressional delegation announced that helicopter manufacturer Sikorsky has landed a $234 million contract from the United States Army to build 16 UH-60M Black Hawks, according to a release Saturday from the office of U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-3rd District.

The initial agreement covers 16 aircraft for the Army, but it is expected to increase by over 100 aircraft in the coming years, the release said. Sikorsky has its headquarters in Stratford.

The agreement sustains production at Sikorsky and its 230 supplier, 43 state industrial base without interruption, according to the release.
"This $234 million contract will support good-paying jobs in Connecticut, provide a boost to our local economy and strengthen our national security," the Connecticut delegation said in the release. "We will always fight for funding and contracts to support the thousands of skilled employees and the local manufacturing industry here in Connecticut."

The deal was announced Thursday by the U.S. Department of War.

A spokesperson for Sikorsky could not be reached on Saturday.

Sikorsky makes Black Hawk fuselages at a large facility in Bridgeport, then transports them to Stratford for further assembly on a production line alongside CH-53K King Stallion cargo helicopters being built for the U.S. Marine Corps, in a sprawling bay for the purpose. Composite rotor blades and titanium rotor set heads are manufactured in Stratford as well. Sikorsky has a large number of external contractors that make other parts and systems installed on helicopters, some of them in Connecticut.

The Black Hawk is equipped with night-vision equipment and other systems allowing for operations in darkness.
Sikorsky has made more than 5,000 Black Hawk helicopters and variants since the helicopter's 1974 debut with the Army, which uses it for utility and air-assault missions.
