Connecticut Department of Revenue Services Reminds
Sellers of Meals of Sales Tax Relief
Relief may be available to sellers of meals during the week of December 12th to December 18th
(HARTFORD, CT) – The Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) reminds those sellers of meals that have not already taken advantage of legislation that allows them to retain the sales tax they collect on sales of meals that they may elect to do so for the week of December 12, 2021 to December 18, 2021.
As set forth in guidance issued by DRS in July of this year, certain sellers of meals are allowed to retain the sales tax they collect on sales of meals during a specified period of time. If a seller determines that it qualifies for this benefit, the seller is eligible to retain sales tax it collects on sales of meals during one of the following weeks:
- August 1, 2021, to August 7, 2021;
- December 12, 2021, to December 18, 2021; or
- May 15, 2022, to May 21, 2022.
According to Commissioner of Revenue Services Mark Boughton, “DRS records indicate that numerous sellers of meals took advantage of the legislation and retained the sales tax collected from August 1, 2021, to August 7, 2021. For those sellers that have not yet taken advantage of this benefit, I want to remind them that the next opportunity for them to do so is this week, the week December 12, 2021, to December 18, 2021.
Commissioner Boughton added that “the legislation that was enacted is intended to help Connecticut businesses deal with the impact of the pandemic” and he encourages all qualified sellers to take advantage of the economic benefit. Commissioner Boughton noted that “if anyone has any questions about the legislation or their eligibility, they are encouraged to review the information on the DRS website.”
