Thursday, March 1st, 2018 – Today starts National Weights and Measures Week, which is held March 1st – 7th every year. This week marks the anniversary of the first weights and measures law signed by John Adams on March 2nd, 1799 which started the process of promoting unified standards for weights and measures in the United States.
The Department of Consumer Protection’s (DCP) Standards Unit regulates weights and measures in the state of Connecticut. The Standards Unit registers over 1400 fuel stations, 600 heating oil dealers and regulates 3,346 locations that have scales and other measuring devices in the state.
“Our Standards Unit interacts with industries that affect the everyday lives of consumers in Connecticut,” said Consumer Protection Commissioner Michelle H. Seagull, “They ensure that the scales in the state work appropriately everywhere from the highway to your grocery store. This isn’t always something that people think of when they think about DCP, but we’re happy that we have opportunities like this week that allow us to share more information about what we do with the public.”
Consumers who have complaints for our Standards Unit may email us at dcp.foodandstandards@ct.gov, or call (860) 713-6160.
