March 6th, 2016 – This year, March 6th through March 12th is Consumer Protection Week. We know that everyone can fall victim to fraud and scams, and even legitimate businesses can provide incomplete contractual information, omit important details or present misleading advertising. Being a smart consumer is your best defense.

Consumers don’t make mistakes because they’re doing something wrong. In fact, 1 in 10 people will fall for a scam in their lifetime, and Americans lose 8.6 billion dollars to phone scams each year. Everyone has a friend, neighbor or family member that has been confronted by fraud or a scam. It usually happens because they simply don’t have access to all of the information. Here at DCP, we work every day to change that.

This week, we’re highlighting the work we do to encourage all consumers to take a deep breath, do their homework before making a purchase or a commitment that they may later regret.

This week, check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ctdcp, follow us on Twitter at @ctdcp, and check out our website at www.ct.gov/dcp to get links to helpful resources from us and our partner agencies, and check out our theme of the day.
