State Liquor Control Reports Results of Recent Enforcement Efforts
Adults Reminded to "Set the Rules" with Teens
On Thursday, July 18th, the Division partnered with officers from the Stamford Police Department to monitor the weekly Alive @ 5 concert series held at Columbus Park in the City of Stamford. This outdoor concert series and its venue attract thousands of spectators. Agents observed no liquor violations at the concert or at the adjacent restaurants and bars.
On Friday, July 19, 2013 the Liquor Control Division and the Putnam Police Department, together with two youths provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, conducted compliance checks of bars and restaurants in the town of Putnam. Twelve bars and restaurants were tested for compliance, and there were no sales to minors.
Later that night, liquor agents partnered with the Hartford Police Department to conduct late-night inspections of several Hartford bars and restaurants. While no serious violations were noted, Sunset Café was issued a written warning for having a minor in a barroom and the West Indian Social Club did not have its permit recorded with the Hartford Town Clerk as required by law.
Also on Friday evening, July 19th, state liquor agents worked with the West Haven Police Department to conduct several evening inspections of bars and restaurants in that town. It was noted that Boku Cocktail, a restaurant in West Haven, had no food available and that Spectators, also a restaurant in West Haven, had no food available.
On Saturday, July 20, the Liquor Control Division and the Danbury Police Department, together with three youths provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, conducted compliance checks of all package stores and grocery stores in Danbury. Forty-three (43) stores were tested for compliance. Eleven (11) allegedly failed by selling alcoholic liquor to one of the minors. The stores which allegedly failed are:
· Danbury Square Wine and Liquor
· Papi’s Liquor
· The Cave
· Stew’s Discount Liquors
· S & D Liquors
· Espinal Grocery
· Torres Grocery
· Gullivers Wine
· Tony Gallo’s Hi-Way Package Store
· MCJ Liquor Store
· Railroad Spirit Shoppe
On Saturday night, agents partnered with officers from the East Haven Police Department to conduct evening inspections at several bars and restaurants in East Haven. Seven establishments were inspected and all cases are under investigation.
“We take our role of reducing teen access to alcoholic liquor very seriously, and we encourage parents, families and friends to do all they can to discourage underage drinking,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said. “The website, www.SetTheRulesCT.org offers great information and resources for adults to have ongoing conversations on this issue with the young people in their lives.”
Commissioner Rubenstein thanked all of the local police departments and the Prevention Partnership for their participation in these enforcement efforts.
