Prelicensure Criminal Conviction Reviews

If you are interested in obtaining an occupational or professional license regulated by the Department of Consumer Protection but are concerned that a past criminal conviction might be an obstacle, the Department has a new way to help. At any time before applying for an occupational or professional license, a potential applicant can submit a request for a prelicensure criminal conviction review on the form below.

On that form, you will be asked to provide information regarding any past criminal convictions. After submitting the prelicensure criminal conviction form, the Department will consider the information you provided and offer an initial assessment indicating whether your criminal conviction is likely to prevent you from obtaining the license you are seeking.

A prelicensure criminal conviction review is completely optional and is meant only as a service to those considering obtaining an occupational or professional license.

Prelicensure criminal conviction reviews are currently available to individuals considering licenses in the following areas: Accountancy, Architecture, Electrical, Plumbing, Solar, Heating Piping and Cooling, Elevator, Residential Stair Lift, Automotive and Flat Glass, Fire Protection Sprinkler, Irrigation, Gas Hearth, Well Drilling, Major Contractors, and Public Service Gas Technicians.

Please note that the Department’s decision on a prelicensure criminal conviction review is only an initial assessment based on the information provided in the request. The ultimate determination of eligibility to a obtain a license is made at the time of application and after a complete background check by the Department.
