Professional Engineer - Initial Licensing and Exam Information

Purpose:

This application is for an individual who is requesting approval to sit for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Exam. Candidates must be pre-approved by the Board before registering for the PE exam through NCEES.

Exams:

  • Passed the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Exam or in the process of taking the exam.

Education:

  • Completed a four-year undergraduate engineering degree. Non-ABET accredited degrees must include at least 48 credit hours in engineering courses taught by the school of engineering.
  • Candidates with foreign undergraduate engineering degrees must have the degree(s) evaluated by NCEES.

 

Experience:

Must have acceptable engineering experience following a four-year undergraduate engineering degree. The experience must be completed at the time of application, not at the time of the exam.

  • Class 1: Candidates with a four-year accredited engineering degree require 4 years of acceptable engineering experience following the degree.

  • Class 2: Candidates with a four-year engineering technology degree or a foreign undergraduate engineering degree require 7 years of acceptable engineering experience following the degree.
  • Advanced Degree Credit: When an advanced degree in engineering is awarded by an approved institution, "education in residence" may be counted towards the experience requirement. This implies that the candidate was a full-time student while completing their postgraduate degree(s). The Board may credit one year of engineering experience for the education in residence, provided that the study was full-time and culminated in obtaining a master’s degree.

  • Foreign Experience: The Board may credit some experience outside the U.S., provided the experience is well documented.

 

Endorsers:

  • At least five (5) persons, of whom at least four (4) shall be members of your profession and not related to you. At least one (1) must be listed in the Experience Record Section. At least three (3) must also be licensed Professional Engineers in the United States or its territories.
