Sylvia’s Pond and the land around it are privately owned. Only five houses border the pond, and all are set well back from the edge, surrounded by trees. White water lilies (Nymphaea odorata) grew in scattered patches around Sylvia’s Pond during our September 2005 survey. The abundance of aquatic plants in general was low, at least in part because rock walls form the edges of the pond, and these drop steeply to deep water in several areas. Only one pondweed species, spotted pondweed (Potamogeton pulcher), was observed; this species occurred in small patches all around the pond. Two species – coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum) and watershield (Brasenia schreberi) – were recorded only at the pond’s north end, both in low abundance.
