Private Pond is a 1-acre pond located on private property in Westport, CT. It is a small, shallow pond with only a few houses that have access to the shore.  There is not a boat ramp. It is mainly used for viewing wildlife and other aesthetic purposes. The 2012 CAES IAPP survey was conducted in regards to a concern of a small floating species that had taken over the surface of the lake. Upon surveying, the species was found to be mosquitofern (Azolla species). This is the first time this plant has been found by CAES IAPP. Generally, this is a common water gardening plant that does not tend to over winter. It seemed to have been able to survive over the 2011-2012 winter and now is the dominant plant in the lake. Three other floating species were found: common duckweed (Lemna minor), great duckweed (Spirodela polyrhiza), and watermeal (Wolffia species). One other plant was found, spineless hornwort (Ceratophyllum echinatum). This plant was the least abundant of the five.
