Phipps Lake is a 26-acre reservoir located in West Haven, CT. It is a private waterbody with no boat ramp and a dam in the southeastern corner. The majority of the lake is shallow; however, the northeastern portion reaches a depth of 5 meters.
CAES IAPP surveyed the lake for the first time in 2018. Seven species were found, two being invasive. The two invasive species are curlyleaf pondweed (Potamogeton crispus) and Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum). They were found throughout the entire lake with the exception of the northeast corner where the lake is relatively deep. White water lily (Nymphaea odorata) and Berchtold's pondweed (Potamogeton berchtoldii) were found in large abundance around the perimeter of the lake. Overall, the lake has a lot of dense vegetation comprised of both native and invasive species. All of the species reach the water’s surface potentially impacting recreation.
