Naraneka Lake, Ridgefield
2024 Aquatic Vegetation Survey Map
Transect Data | Water Data
Naraneka Lake, also known as Pierrepont Pond, is a 38-acre waterbody located in Ridgefield, CT. It features a public car-top/carry-in boat launch within Seth Low Pierrepont State Park Reserve, where fishing and paddling are permitted. A community beach is located on the north side of the lake for residents. A dam is situated on the northwestern side, and a small island, Chauncey Island, lies in the center of the lake. The deepest point of the lake, near the dam, reaches approximately 13 feet (4 meters). Recent aquatic plant management with herbicides likely influenced the plants observed during this survey.
On July 10, 2024, the CAES OAIS conducted its first survey of Naraneka Lake. A total of 20 plant species were documented, including 3 invasive and 17 native species. The invasive species were minor naiad (Najas minor), phragmites (Phragmites australis), and purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria). Minor naiad is an annual species that propagates from seed each year. It was found in several locations where it will likely not become problematic. Phragmites and purple loosestrife are shoreline species that were found in only a few locations. Phragmites can spread quickly, and annual monitoring is suggested to determine if control is needed.
The most common aquatic plant was coontail (Ceratophyllum demersum). It was found throughout most of the lake except for the deepest areas. Coontail is a native plant that reached the surface in many locations where it would impede recreational activities. Other common species included cattail (Typha species) and swamp loosestrife (Decodon verticillatus), both of which are semi-aquatic shoreline species. Bur-reed (Sparganium species) and leafy pondweed (Potamogeton foliosus) were also found in several areas. All other native species had smaller populations distributed around the lake.
