2018 Aquatic Plant Survey of Lake Elise
Lake Elise is a 15.5-acre lake located in Middlebury, CT. The lake and its surrounding land is owned and maintained by the Middlebury Land Trust. The shoreline is wooded, and there is no development around the lake. A hiking path circles the lake, and a dam is located at the southern end. The lake has no public boat access and is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of 2 meters.
In 2018, CAES IAPP performed a resurvey of Lake Elise, the first survey done in 2011. Ten species were found, a decrease from fifteen in 2011. The same invasive species, fanwort (Cabomba caroliniana), was found in 2018, though at a much lower abundance. In 2011, it formed a thick ring around the entire perimeter, but in 2018 it was much patchier. Fanwort was still the dominant species in the lake, but the nine native species were more abundant in the northeastern portion of the lake. Overall, the aquatic plant abundance was less than found in 2011, with very little found along the western and southern perimeter.
