Cedar Lake, Chester - 2010
2010 Aquatic Plant Survey Map of Cedar Lake
Transect Data | Water Data
Our 2010 survey of Cedar Lake is a repeat of a survey we performed in 2004 with the intent to study changes in plant populations over time. A total of 26 species were recorded in Cedar Lake during in 2010 compared to 21 species found in the 2004. Cedar Lake is therefore considered a species rich lake. The two invasives, fanwort (Cabomba caroliniana) and variable-leaf watermilfoil (Myriophyllum heterophyllum), found in 2004 are still present but the area of fanwort has increased substantially. Fanwort is the most frequently occurring species in the lake with the largest patch found in the northern portion. Variable-Leaf watermilfoil was found in medium-sized patches around the perimeter of the lake and little change in total area occurred from 2004 to 2010. It is possible fanwort is out-competing variable-leaf watermilfoil and acting to suppress its spread. Large patches of yellow water lily (Nuphar variegata) and white water lily (Nymhaea odorata) were found bordering the channel created by the flow of Pattaconck Brook into the northern portion of the lake. White water lily was also found in a large patch in the southern area of the lake and also in small to medium sized patches on both the eastern and western sides. Common bladderwort (Utricularia macrorhiza) was only found in the northern portion of the lake. Yellow water lily was frequently found occurring with watershield (Brasenia schreberi) and white water lily. Pickerelweed (Pontederia cordata) was recorded around the entire perimeter of the lake, occurring close to shore.
