Attorney General Tong Blasts NextEra Energy for $4 Million White House Ballroom Donation
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong today blasted NextEra Energy following reports that the company gave $4 million last year to President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom reconstruction fund before seeking federal approval for its merger with Dominion Energy.
The merger is currently under review by both the Department of Justice and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. If approved, the new combined company would be unprecedented in size, scope, and market penetration, increasing incentives for the company to drive up costs and strategically withhold energy resources to benefit its portfolio at the expense of ratepayers and states.
Attorney General Tong has urged FERC to reject the merger, noting the companies’ bad faith and anti-competitive behavior, and significant threats to energy affordability, reliability, and competition.
“It goes without saying—NextEra did not give $4 million to Donald Trump’s ballroom because they love historic preservation. This is a brazen attempt to curry favor with a compromised administration to jam through an unprecedented merger that will drive up costs for American families. Connecticut is not for sale. We will not be bought or deterred, and we will continue to aggressively oppose this merger at every turn,” said Attorney General Tong.
