Attorney General Tong Statement on U.S. Supreme Court Decision in Texas Abortion Case
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong released the following statement today regarding the decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court in United States of America v. State of Texas et. al and Whole Women’s Health v. Jackson. Attorney General Tong had joined a coalition of 24 attorneys general urging the court to block the ban from going into effect and to allow challenges to the ban to proceed. The Supreme Court ruled today allowing certain challenges to proceed, but declined to stay the ban. The Texas law imposes a ban on almost all abortions in that state.“The Texas abortion ban is a dangerous violation of the well-established right of individuals to make private healthcare decisions free from political interference. The Supreme Court’s refusal to stay this clearly unconstitutional attack on women and patients is deeply disappointing. It is however a small silver lining that the Court has allowed a narrow set of challenges to this law to proceed, and I will join attorneys general across the nation in supporting that critical fight at the trial court level,” said Attorney General Tong. “We are also watching closely for the decision on the Mississippi ban, positioned as a direct threat to decades of precedent under Roe v. Wade. Connecticut is prepared to fight in any court at every level to protect the fundamental right of all individuals to privacy in our personal healthcare choices.”
