Attorney General Tong: No One is Above the Law
(Hartford, CT) -- Attorney General William Tong released the following statement on this morning's Supreme Court decisions in Trump v. Vance and Trump v. Mazars USA:
“No one is above the law. The court's rulings set an important precedent to ensure no President is immune to justice,” said Attorney General Tong. "Chief Justice Roberts could not have been clearer that the 'public has a right to every man's evidence' and every man includes the President of the United States. With these decisions, the Supreme Court laid out a path so that both Congress and prosecutors can obtain the evidence that they need to legislate, investigate, and enforce the law.”
In Vance, the Court ruled that the President is not immune from disclosure of tax returns subpoenaed by a New York grand jury. In Mazars, the Court similarly held that the President cannot simply refuse to honor congressional subpoenas, and crafted a new standard that recognizes Congress’ need for presidential documents in developing legislation.
Attorney General Tong was a member of a multistate coalition that submitted an amicus brief supporting the prevailing side in Trump v. Vance.
