Attorney General Tong Statement on Supreme Court Census Ruling
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong issued a statement today regarding the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court not to rule on the constitutionality of President Donald Trump’s plan to unlawfully exclude noncitizens from the census count.“The Constitution requires the government to include all residents in the census. Immigrants are people, and they must be included. The Court today didn't disagree. It just held that it's too early to strike down the president's order -- in part because nobody knows whether the outgoing Trump Administration is even capable of implementing its own discriminatory plan,” said Attorney General Tong. “I am committed to working with the new administration wherever possible, and through the courts wherever necessary, to ensure that every person in this country is counted in the 2020 census.”
President Trump last July issued a memorandum seeking to exclude undocumented immigrants from the congressional apportionment base— among a series of illegal maneuvers to manipulate the census count and congressional apportionment. Connecticut joined a coalition of states, cities and counties led by New York in suing to block the unlawful plan.
