Attorney General Tong Praises Utilities for Reconnecting Customers During Emergency

(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong thanked Eversource, United Illuminating, Connecticut Natural Gas and Southern Connecticut Gas today after being told the utilities will reconnect customers disconnected for nonpayment prior to the COVID-19 emergency moratorium.

The Public Utilities Regulatory Authority granted an emergency moratorium on March 12, suspending electric, natural gas and water utility shut-offs in response to the COVID-19 emergency. The Office of the Attorney General had filed a petition seeking a halt on all utility service terminations for a 30 day period subject to renewal to enable residents to remain safely at home during the pandemic.

“I want to thank Eversource, UI, CNG and SCG for doing the right thing for their customers and Connecticut. If your service was disconnected prior to the moratorium, please contact your utility for assistance. Families across Connecticut are struggling right now with unexpected job losses, the sudden burden of homeschooling our children, and worries about the health of our loved ones. The one thing we can do right now is stay home as much as possible. For that to work, we all need electricity, heat and water,” said Attorney General Tong.

The policy also applies to Yankee Gas and Aquarion Water customers, utilities also owned by Eversource Energy.
