AG Tong Statement on State Supreme Court Affirmation of State Absentee Ballot Provisions
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong released the following statement after the full Connecticut Supreme Court affirmed the constitutionality of the state’s absentee ballot provisions protecting voters in the August primary during this unprecedented pandemic.“The Supreme Court’s decision today must put this case to rest—the state’s actions to protect the health and safety of voters during this pandemic were wholly constitutional. No one should have to risk their life to vote. Since day one, this challenge has been part of a nationwide right-wing voter suppression campaign designed to undermine public participation and trust in our elections. This office will always protect and defend the rights of voters,” said Attorney General Tong.
Chief Justice Richard A. Robinson had previously dismissed the plaintiffs’ claims on jurisdictional grounds. The plaintiffs then filed their claims in the Superior Court, which ruled on the merits of the case, affirming the constitutionality of the states’ actions. The plaintiffs then appealed to the full state Supreme Court, which affirmed the trial court’s decision and held that the state’s actions were constitutional.
Assistant Attorney General Michael Skold argued the case today before the State Supreme Court on behalf of the state.
