AG Tong Releases Statement After Court Blocks Politically Motivated Attack on Postal Service, Issues Nationwide Injunction Following Connecticut, Multistate Suit
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong issued the following statement after a federal judge issued a nationwide injunction blocking a “politically-motivated attack” on the U.S. Postal Service ahead of the November election.“This decision could not have been more clear—the Trump administration is engaged in a politically-motivated attack on the U.S. Postal Service in order to delegitimize and disrupt the November election. This nationwide injunction is a significant victory, but this fight is far from over. We will continue to vigorously defend the rule of law and our postal service operations. Americans can vote with confidence this November, and trust that we are doing everything it takes to ensure each and every ballot is counted,” said Attorney General Tong.
In issuing his decision, a federal judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington agreed with Connecticut and the multistate coalition that the Trump administration has been engaged in a “politically-motivated attack” on the Postal Service that has made mail delivery slower and less efficient.
Connecticut is part of a multistate lawsuit led by Washington State Attorney General Bob Ferguson, that was the first to sue the Trump administration asserting that the Postal Service acted outside of its authority to implement changes to the postal system, and did not follow the proper procedures required by federal law. Washington and Connecticut are joined by Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Wisconsin.
