A Thanksgiving Message from Attorney General William Tong

Dear Connecticut,

Thanksgiving at our house is going to be different this year. For the first time in many years, we won’t be sharing the same turkey and pies around the same table with all the generations of the Tong/Hotchkiss family. There is no doubt a sense of loss, but there is still so much that I am thankful for. This year more than ever, I am grateful for the health of my family, and ever mindful of the 4,926 empty chairs at Connecticut tables this holiday— the seats of grandparents, parents, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunts and friends all lost to COVID-19 this year. And I keep in my thoughts and prayers the doctors and nurses and frontline workers who will be apart from their families this year to care for the 968 Connecticut residents still hospitalized with COVID-19.

I am grateful for all of our essential workers who have educated our children, fed our families, and kept our communities safe this past year. I am grateful for the attorneys and staff in the Office of the Attorney General who kept the work of the state going during these unprecedented times. I am grateful for the leaders in Connecticut—from our Governor and legislators, to our local leaders in our towns and cities—who have shown the nation that by listening to science and public health experts we can and will get through this pandemic together. I am grateful for all of the Connecticut residents who have put health and safety first, and who have made sacrifices great and small to protect their fellow neighbors.

And as we celebrate the early days of our American history, I am ever grateful for our democracy and the majority of Americans who voted in this past election for justice, fairness, possibility and opportunity. I am grateful now for the chance we all have to resuscitate the democratic and legal norms that make us beautiful, and to breathe new life into the constitutional system that makes our nation exceptional.

Please stay safe this Thanksgiving. I wish you and your families a healthy holiday.

With Gratitude,

William Tong
