AG TONG STATEMENT ON TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S CITIZENSHIP QUESTION ANNOUNCEMENT
Attorney General William Tong issued the following statement today after the Trump Administration announced it would stop trying to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census:
"Today, the Trump Administration finally admitted that it has lost its racist, partisan, dishonest effort to add a citizenship question to the 2020 Census. From the start, the citizenship question has been a key part of the Administration's campaign to undercount immigrants and undercut their voting power, and represents a direct attack on Connecticut and the people of our state. Together with 18 states, 16 local governments and the U.S. Conference of Mayors, we fought the President's intimidation campaign and prevailed. There will be no citizenship question on the 2020 Census," said Attorney General Tong. "Now more than ever, it is important that every person in Connecticut fill out the census without fear. We need to double down on our efforts to make sure every person is counted. Our federal funding, our voice in Congress, and our fundamental commitment to democracy depend on it."
