CSDE Recruitment for 2 Deputy Commissioner Positions

Are you excited at the prospect of obtaining a job in public service with a focus on PK-12 education and serving the more than 513,000 students and over 100,000 educators and other support staff in our state?  The Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) is currently accepting letters of interest for two Deputy Commissioner positions (Deputy Commissioner for Educational Supports and Wellness, and Deputy Commissioner for Academics and Innovation). Deputy Commissioner (DC) for Educational Supports and Wellness

This DC will directly oversee-

Educator recruitment, retention and supports that promote the occupation of teaching; educator effectiveness and professional learning; educator standards and certification processes; new work on dyslexia and reading disabilities; provision of special education and related services; programs and services related to social, emotional, mental, physical health and overall well-being of students and staff; wraparound services that address the needs of the whole child such as afterschool services; child nutrition services; family and community engagement, and compliance with federal and state laws.

Deputy Commissioner for Academics and Innovation

This DC will directly oversee-

College and career planning and readiness; strategic partnerships  with industry and institutions of higher education to ensure our K-12 system meets workforce needs; new work of the Center for Literacy Research and Reading Success; the academic needs of all student groups to ensure equitable educational experience for all;  efforts of the Performance Office, Turnaround Office, Office of Strategic Planning Partnerships including charter school, regional school choice and the Sheff settlement; and compliance with federal and state laws.

Upon “Go-Live”, key changes to the overall process when applying for State of Connecticut Executive Branch jobs include:

  • Discontinuing the practice of separate applications for examinations and job openings. You will no longer have to be on a former examination list to apply for current job openings (except for the below job classes). There is only one website called the On-Line Employment Center (OEC) and, if there is a current job opening that interests you, simply apply for it! Our evaluation of whether or not your application meets the minimum qualifications of the job will constitute the examination.
  • Eliminating all examination lists, with the exception of the following job classes:
    • Correction Officer
    • Correctional Lieutenant
    • State Police Trooper Trainee
    • Protective Services Trainee
    • State Police Sergeant
    • Police Sergeant
    • State Police Master Sergeant
    • Police Master Sergeant
    • State Police Lieutenant
