Members of the public have reported receiving calls, reportedly from the Judicial Branch of the Public Defender’s office, indicating that their loved one is in jail and they need to immediately send cash or provide a credit card number for bail. These calls are scams, so please do not send cash or provide your credit card number or any other personal information. A public defender would never call and ask for money or credit card information. If you receive such a call, contact the State Police in your state.

The Office of Chief Public Defender is accepting applications for FY 16/17 representation of indigent adults on the Family Support Magistrate docket in the following locations:

Hartford Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Danbury Wednesday
New Britain Monday, Thursday, Friday
Litchfield Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday
Middletown Monday, Thursday, 1st and 3rd Fridays
Meriden Wednesday, some Thursdays
Norwich Wednesday, Friday
Ansonia/Milford Monday, Tuesday
New Haven Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday
Putnam Thursday
Tolland Tuesday
Windham Monday
Norwalk 4th Monday, Thursday/Friday (alternates with Stamford depending on the docket)
Stamford 3rd Monday, Thursday/Friday (alternates with Norwalk depending on the docket)

Approved applicants will be compensated at the per-diem rate of $150 per day and must be available throughout the day as needed by the Magistrate or the family court. Appointments are made by the court to represent clients at risk of possible incarceration for failure to pay court ordered child support. Successful applicants should be familiar with the procedures of family court and child support matters.
