HARTFORD, September 5 - The Department of Consumer Protection is alerting parents and children’s caregivers to a new recall of children’s sunglasses that have been deemed unsafe due to excessive levels of lead.

About 215,000 pairs of the sunglasses were sold nationwide at CVS, K-mart, Rite-Aid, Walgreens and other retail stores nationwide starting in December 2013 for between $7 and $13.under Disney, Marvel and Sears/Kmart brands. They come in a variety of colors, and included printed images of characters on the frames. Surface paint on the sunglasses contains excessive levels of lead, which is prohibited under federal law.

The following style numbers located inside the sunglasses’ left temple arm are included in the recall:

Lead is a naturally-occurring element that can be harmful to humans when ingested or inhaled, particularly to children under the age of six. Lead poisoning can cause a number of adverse human health effects, but is particularly detrimental to the neurological development of children.

Children's products that are designed or intended primarily for use by children 12 years of age or younger cannot contain greater than 100 ppm (0.01 percent) of total lead content in any accessible component part of the children's product.

Department of Consumer Protection agents will visit retailers to ensure that the recalled items have been removed from store shelves.
