Department Releases Results of Undercover Alcohol Compliance Check in Norwalk

HARTFORD, July 11 – The Department of Consumer Protection is releasing the results of alcohol compliance checks undertaken yesterday afternoon by the Division of Liquor Control in cooperation with Norwalk Police and youth volunteers from the Governor’s Prevention Partnership.

On Wednesday, July 10, agents from the Liquor Control Division and officers from the Norwalk Police Department conducted compliance checks at 27 package stores in the City of Norwalk.  Two youths, age 17 and 19, provided by the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, assisted in the operation. Of the 27 stores tested, two stores allegedly failed by selling alcoholic liquor to the minor(s).

The stores that allegedly failed are:

¨       The Liquor Center, 238 East Avenue

¨       Harborview Wine and Spirits, 48 Main Street

Routine compliance checks help the Department of Consumer Protection to identify businesses that knowingly or unknowingly sell alcohol to minors and bring them back into compliance with state law.

“These checks are part of our ongoing statewide efforts to bring permit holders into compliance, and to prevent underage liquor sales,” Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said today. “Summer is a time when youth seem to be particularly at-risk for motor vehicle accidents and all types of outdoor injuries, many of them alcohol-related. Permittees must take all measures needed in order to avoid selling to minors.”

The Commissioner thanked Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik and the Special Services Division of the Norwalk Police Department, along with the Governor’s Prevention Partnership for their assistance in the operation.

The businesses that allegedly sold to a minor during yesterday’s compliance operation will be brought before the Liquor Control Commission for an administrative hearing, at which time they will have an opportunity to address the charges.
