HARTFORD, June 1 – Two Stratford establishments were charged over the past weekend with selling alcohol to a minor after failing a routine compliance check, Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein said today.

On the afternoon of Friday, May 27, 2011 beginning at 4:00 p.m., agents from the Department of Consumer Protection Liquor Control Division and the members of the Stratford Police Department partnered to conduct compliance checks at package stores and grocery stores that sell beer in the town of Stratford.

Two volunteer youths, age 17 and 18, were provided by the Governor's Prevention Partnership to assist in the compliance checks.

Of the 27 stores tested for compliance, two failed by allegedly selling alcoholic liquor to one of the minors.  The stores that allegedly failed and may face administrative charges before the Liquor Control Commission are:

·         Surf Package Store, 1980 Stratford Avenue

·         Sam's Liquor, 7365 Main Street

“Partnering with local law enforcement on these checks benefits everyone involved, and helps us to reduce youth access to alcohol,” Commissioner Rubenstein said. “We express our sincere thanks to the Stratford Police Department for their continuing efforts to reduce underage drinking within their community.”
