New Automobile Warranties Account Surcharge
A new automobile warranties account surcharge (also known as the Lemon Law surcharge) of $3.00 per vehicle is imposed on the sale or lease of each new motor vehicle registered as a passenger vehicle, a passenger and commercial vehicle (combination) or a motorcycle. This includes vehicles registered in any other state as well as Connecticut. The surcharge is to be submitted annually to report sales from January 1st – December 31st. Please note, the law has changed and any annual surcharge paid after March 31st will be subject to a $2.00 per vehicle late fee.New Application:

Pursuant to Public Act 21-37, Section 42-172, the New Automobile Warranties Account Surcharge (NAW) has changed to an annual payment. The Department of Consumer Protection will send notifications for payment of the surcharges for all new motor vehicles sold or leased during the prior calendar year of January 1st to December 31st approximately 45 – 60 days prior to the annual expiration with the necessary information. Your annual lump sum payment will be due by March 31st of each year.
- If a dealership has not paid their surcharges for all new motor vehicles sold or leased from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021 or is past due on other surcharge reporting periods, please email dcp.licenseservices@ct.gov for instructions to pay online.
