Maltby Lake #2 in West Haven is 23 acres and has a maximum depth of 32 feet. It is one of three reservoirs owned by the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority in West Haven. The lake is surrounded by forest. Fishing is allowed by special permit, but boats are prohibited.

  Variable pondweed (Potamogeton gramineus) was the most abundant aquatic species recorded in Maltby Lake #2 during a survey in early September 2004. A total of eight flowering plants were found, including one invasive species.

Variable pondweed was found all around the lake, occurring in both large and small patches but nowhere in more than 12 feet of water. Large-Leaf pondweed (Potamogeton amplifolius) also was abundant, primarily in the northwest and southwest parts of the lake. The invasive annual minor naiad (Najas minor) was abundant in the lake’s northern area, with one patch found in the southern part of the lake. Thread-Leaf naiad (Najas gracillima) was found growing with it in one location.

Water smartweed (Polygonum amphibium) was found as individual plants to small patches on northern end of the lake’s western side, always in water less than 5 feet deep. Small pondweed (Potamogeton pusillus) was found in small patches in the northern end of the lake, and clasping-leaf pondweed (Potamogeton perfoliatus) was recorded in a small patches at the southern end of the lake. Spikerush (Eleocharis species) was found in shallow water on the west side of the lake.
