Attorney General Tong Calls on Eversource and United Illuminating to Provide Immediate Compensation to Connecticut Families Following Passage of Energy Bill

(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong today praised passage of the “Take Back the Grid” bill and called on Eversource and United Illuminating to immediately compensate consumers for food and medicine lost as a result of extended power outages following Tropical Storm Isaias.

“It should not take a new law for Eversource and United Illuminating to do the right thing. While this law does not retroactively apply to the Isaias outages, there is absolutely nothing stopping these companies from providing immediate compensation to Connecticut families who lost hundreds of dollars in food and medicine,” said Attorney General Tong. “Connecticut families pay way too much for their utilities and get far too little in return. This legislation gives regulators a powerful opportunity to control rates and compel performance—if done right. My office will be involved at every step of the process before the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority to ensure new performance standards result in tangible benefits to ratepayers. Connecticut families simply cannot afford to pay more for their energy, and I commend the Connecticut General Assembly for this strong pro-consumer measure.”
