ATTORNEY GENERAL TONG STATEMENT ON SUPREME COURT ARGUMENTS ON CENSUS CITIZENSHIP QUESTION
(Hartford, CT) – Attorney General William Tong issued the following statement regarding United States Supreme Court arguments Monday in the case challenging the Trump Administration's attempt to add a question about citizenship to the 2020 Census.
"Based on yesterday's argument, I am very concerned about the outcome of this case and the profoundly adverse impact to Connecticut. Three lower courts carefully and thoughtfully found that the factual bases for including the question were unfounded and untrue, and that Secretary Ross ignored the procedures for adding a question to the Census. The three lower courts all found that adding the question would result adversely affect the accuracy of the census. This cynical, political ploy by the Trump Administration will deny states like ours, communities of color, and immigrants the representation and funding they are owed. It is now more important than ever that we work closely with our immigrant communities to ensure each and every person is counted. I want to recognize and thank Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz who has already begun this important task, and stand ready to assist in any way I can," said Attorney General William Tong.
Connecticut is part of a coalition of 18 states, 16 local governments and the U.S. Conference of Mayors challenging the citizenship question.
