Statement of Attorney General George Jepsen

on Massachusetts Agreement In Proposed NU-NSTAR Merger

“We will carefully review the Massachusetts agreement, but that agreement has little bearing on whether the proposed merger is in the public interest in Connecticut.  NU and NSTAR still must prove that Connecticut customers will be better off as a result of the merger.

“Connecticut ratepayers must receive tangible benefits, including up-front rate credits and a reasonable sharing of merger savings achieved over time, as well as commitments concerning service reliability, storm response, jobs and energy efficiency,” Attorney General George Jepsen said.

Hearings began this week before Connecticut’s Public Utilities Regulatory Authority on the proposed merger. PURA’s schedule calls for a final decision in the case by April 2.
